What is a lumen and why is it important?
Previously, lamps were selected by wattage – the higher the wattage, the brighter the light.
Today, this is no longer the case, as energy-efficient LED bulbs provide significantly more light with less power.
The amount of light is now measured in lumens (lm) .
The more lumens, the brighter the light, regardless of how much electricity the lamp consumes.
Lumens compared to the power of an old incandescent bulb
| Incandescent bulb power | Approximate luminous flux |
|---|---|
| 25W | ≈ 250 lumens |
| 40W | ≈ 450 lumens |
| 60W | ≈ 800 lumens |
| 100W | ≈ 1500 lumens |
What does this mean when buying?
Choose a lamp by lumens , not watts.
Example:
If you want the same brightness as an old 60 W bulb, choose an LED bulb with a luminous flux of around 800 lm .
